Graduate Expert Program Graduation Ceremony
The convergence of artificial intelligence (AI) and soft skills took centre stage at the graduation ceremony of the Saica Group’s Graduate Expert Programme, held last 26 February at the Teatro de las Esquinas in Zaragoza. The event brought together almost 300 participants — including students from several universities — and celebrated the completion of an intensive two‑year training journey for 32 new graduates.
The ceremony was a blend of emotion, reflection and cutting‑edge technology. For the first time, the event featured ‘Owly’, an AI‑generated avatar who co‑hosted the proceedings and is set to become the mascot of Campus Saica. Its presence throughout the evening highlighted the company’s commitment to using AI as a strategic ally across all processes.
A standout moment of the ceremony was the keynote address delivered by María Aperador, criminologist, cybersecurity specialist and influential science communicator with a strong digital followingHer talk focused on the risks inherent in the digital world and the importance of pairing technological progress with critical thinking. She reminded attendees that online “nothing is quite what it seems”, explaining how fraud schemes often manipulate emotions to provoke impulsive decisions and that the best defence is to train rational thinking. In a context where AI amplifies both opportunities and threats, she stressed the need to strengthen soft skills, digital awareness and personal responsibility to make sound decisions and lead with good judgement.
Saica Group’s President and CEO, Susana Alejandro, congratulated the 32 graduates and emphasised the programme’s strategic importance for the organisation’s future. Despite the “tsunami” of AI, she remarked, “people make the difference and are the true heart of Saica”. She reaffirmed the Group’s strong commitment to continuous growth and strong commitment to talent development, internal progression and professional advancement. Addressing the graduates directly, she encouraged them to embrace upcoming challenges, adding: “You will have many opportunities… but above all, enjoy the journey.”
The ceremony, presented by Duncan Lawrence, the Group’s People Experience Director, concluded with a final surprise— the appearance of an AI powered humanoid robot, adding a futuristic touch to an afternoon where tradition and innovation came together seamlessly.
Created in the 1990s and delivered in collaboration with Universidad San Jorge and ESIC University, the programme has already benefited more than 500 participants, many of whom now hold key leadership roles within Saica. Additional insights were shared by Campus Saica Manager Óscar Ovelleiro and graduates Clara Montón, María Soldevilla and Álvaro Esteban.
The programme offers two years of hands on development in a real role. Each Graduate Expert is supported by a supervisor, tutor and mentor — all senior leaders in their respective areas. The first year prioritises technical learning, while the second focuses on applying this knowledge to real projects. Upon finishing, participants undergo both internal and external assessments to determine the next steps in their development — whether in a technical role or, when aptitudes align, within a leadership pathway.
Those interested in applying for future programme openings may do so through the Grupo Saica website. Under the “People” section, candidates will find “Campus Saica”, where they can access detailed information and submit their application for the position that best matches their profile.
